GWHS CONCERT BAND
The George Wythe High School Concert Band is comprised of 8th - 12th grade students. Members explore a wide variety of wind band literature as well as fine tune skill sets through the development of fundamentals and overall individual technique. This ensemble performs at local concerts and 1-2 band festivals in the spring. Concert Band is a year-long course offered during 5th Block.
6TH & 7TH GRADE BANDS
The Beginning Band is designed to provide students with an introductory experience on band instruments. Beginning Band is open to all 6th Grade students. Prior instrumental music experience is not required. Recruiting and enrollment registration occur in the spring of the 5th Grade year at Spiller Elementary School & beginning of the 6th Grade year at Scott Memorial Middle School. A Parent Meeting to discuss obtaining or renting an instrument is held at the beginning of the school year. The Band will perform at two concerts throughout the year.
7th Grade Band is a year-long class that is continuation of 6th Grade Band. This class will continue to develop students’ musical skills with even more exciting and challenging pieces of music. Students will begin to learn how to take the skills they learn and apply these concepts to their everyday band setting. This band will perform in at least two concerts throughout the school year.
GWHS MIGHTY MAROON MARCHING BAND
The marching band is one of the most visible ensembles at George Wythe High School. The Marching season starts with camps in July and finishes with the Wytheville Christmas Parade in December. The Mighty Maroon Marching Band performs at all Home Football Games, select Away Games, several Band Competitions across the state, and the Wytheville Christmas Parade. The Band also hosts its own Band Competition, the George Wythe Band Festival, in October.
GWHS INDOOR PROGRAMS
Established in 2017, the George Wythe High School Indoor Ensembles are made up of the GWHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble and the GWHS Winter Guard. Both groups start practicing towards the end of December, with CIPA competitions in February, March, & April.
